7. Lil Wayne – Lollipop
6. Kanye West – Love Lockdown
808s & Heartbreaks is a Top 5 album of the year for me, and this track introduced the world to what West was about to do to Hip Hop, and it’s a beautiful thing.
5. Fleet Foxes – He Doesn’t Know Why
It was good to hear a few guys who can sing really well without an autotune. Psychedelic.
4. Deadmau5 – Faxing Berlin
Podcasts, clubs from New Orleans to Shanghai, Beatport, played this song ragged. For good reason too: it’s a trance masterpiece, that warms you immediately. Completely enjoyable for dance fans.
3. Christian Scott – The Crawler
I don’t remember being more excited about a musician last year than when I heard Christian. I thought Jazz was dead, and it might be, but don’t tell Mr. Scott. The fact that he went to school with my Guest Music Picker, Captain, made it extra special to listen to.
2. Coldplay – Viva La Vida
Everyone knows that these Brits can do wrong with their magic formula, at times (especially for musicians) it's maddening. Nevertheless, they did it, and not you. The lyrics sealed the deal on this one: A history lesson, a dramatic orchestral push, all over an extremely unique and interesting emphasis on downbeats. I can’t think of another song that sounds like this, yet it still follows their simple formula for creating pop masterpieces.
1. Lil Wayne – A Milli
The biggest track on the biggest album of the year, Tha Carter III. ‘Nuff said.

Walt's top 5- June
This one is full of mostly old stuff just because summertime brings up old memories with friends. listening to some of these cd's on the way to the beach or to an out of town show were like the best times of my life. so let's go.
1. Minus the Bear- highly refined pirates

this cd is the fucking bomb. any time i hear any song on it, i know exactly how the next song is gonna start. it's that kind of cd. know what i mean?
2. Falling Cycle- the conflict

so brutal. this was one of the bands that played the first hardcore show i ever went to back in ninth grade. the drummer lit his drums on fire right before a breakdown. i can listen to this whole cd on full blast and nothing sounds old or overdone. come on.
3. Billy Joel- the essential billy joel

the man.
4. Madball- hold it down

i loved this band in high school, despite their blatant, digusting new york sound. last summer my friend brian broke this out on vinyl when we were super faded and we had those good kind of flashbacks where you want to mosh in a living room. there's just something about em.
5. Underoath- the changing of times

still one of my favorite cd's from back in the day. this was the last cd with dallas and probably one of their best. i was at his last show with them in ocala at some indoor basketball court. it was the illest, kids were jumping off the hoops and killing each other. probably that show and every other time i got to see them play a church or some rec center were truly some of the best days.

Best of May 2008 Part I
Song of the Month- TIE!
Lollipop (Remix)- Lil' Wayne featuring Kanye West &
Put it On- Young Jeezy featuring Kanye West

Band of the Month: Everest.
Facts:
1. New Album Out Now!!!
2. Made television debut May 15th on Late Night with Conan O'Brian.
3. Listed as one of Neil Young's "Top 8" on Myspace.
Sounds like: Ryan Adams(+)Wilco(-) the bullshit=EVEREST!Scratching the Surface: 5 Things You Should Know about JAPAN
5. Bura-Sera or Buru-sera. A term coined for grown men's obsession with Japanese school girls. "Buru" is Japanese for bloomers and "sera" for sailor suit, the style of garmet typically worn by Japanese school girls. There are even Buru-sera shops with vending machines filled with, yes, I'm about to say it, used schoolgirl panties. This is fucked up; fucked up but something you should know.

4. NO SHIT SHERLOCK ALERT!!! Tokyo and Kyoto, two of Japan's major Global cities contain all the same letters, they're just switched around. Walt first pointed this out to me a couple months ago. Cool, right? America should buy into this shit. It would make everything easier.
3. THE JAPANESE BATH- Japanese folks do it right. Their showers are often in separate rooms, as opposed to the European and American style of bathrooms, which cater to convenience, where all utilities-sink, shower, toilet, etc. are all located in close proximity. The reason they're separated is so they can use as little water as possible. It relates to the notion of the enso, in Zen Buddhism which means "have everything, but nothing in excess." Hence, the conservation of water during bathing. The showers are tiled which hold in more heat. So, water on. Wet Body. Water off. Lather body. Water on. Rinse Body. Repeat, if necessary. No need to keep the water running while lathering. Smart, huh?
2. Old vs. New- One of my favorite things about Japan is the juxtaposition of thousand year old temples scattered throughout some of the most advanced cities on the planet. These temples are time portals to a time before everything. And they are still here. Hmm..perhaps there's a reason for that. Pontificate that with your friends, stoners.
1. Uchi-Soto "Us and Them"- The Japanese fucking invented exclusivity. They're raised in an almost structural society based on varying strengths of association with one another. They are taught to think of themselves as part of a group, and that they're group is always interacting with other groups. This is often said to be one of the first things foreigners notice about the Japanese and its often described as a cold feeling to strangers-they way they walk, heads down, quickly, and efficiently. If you find a group you want to be a part of, it's going to be tough to assimilate. So trendsters, thank the Japanese for your superiority complex that you know more than everyone else. You are fucking idiots.

Shane's Top Five Albums/May '08
1. Modest Mouse- Lonesome Crowded West
A mon avis, Modest Mouse is the greatest band of our generation. This is their masterpiece. The lyrics on this album are as good as lyrics get. Issac Brock is an ambassador for words. If you don't have this album you are a fucking idiot.Top Track(s): Heart Cooks Brain, Out of Gas

2. Every Time I Die- The Big Dirty

I bought this album a while back and never really gave it a chance but when I threw it in the other day I was more than pleased. Its not HOT DAMN!, their face-melting, gut-trashing 2003 drop, but it's great. The notable shift in sound from straight-up brutal metalcore to Southern Rock marks their maturity as a band. Definitely different, but righteous all the same.
Top Tracks(s): No Son of Mine
3. As Tall As Lions- As Tall As Lions

I saw this band years ago when they were called Sundaze at a tiny church in Newburyport, MA. They're so tight...drums, guitars; everything. Original sound. Inspiring jams. Fellas, if you can't land a hunny with this album there is something seriously wrong with you. Great sex jams. I promise.
Top Track(s): Love, Love, Love (Love, Love)
4. Cassino- Sounds of Salvation

Cassino= Northstar- Jake Fisher and Gabe Renfroe. This band is perfect for anytime you need to drive and reflect. Served best during late afternoon.
Top Track(s): ALL OF THEM especially American Low and Platano
-1.jpg)
5. Owen- At Home with Owen
-1.jpg)
My favorite singer/songwriter, Mike Kinsella, front man of American Football, hits it so fucking perfectly on this album. A lot softer than the other selections but flawless. A must have for anyone's collection.
Top Track(s): A Bird in Hand
Walt's Top Five Albums/Take into Account
5 cds i'm listening to right now. and so can you.
1.Manchester Orchestra-like a virgin losing a child

think of copeland but heavier. they make about as many references to god but are cooler cause they say 'shitty' in one of the songs.
2.The Bronx-the bronx

i'm really only listening to this right now because it reminds of a band i used to listen to in high school named The Deal, who are equally as good and are worth checking out. plus the bronx are just fucking solid.
3.Daft Punk-alive 2007

all the best mixed into one hour of whetness. get really faded and listen to this with like 4 friends.
4.Tokyo Police Club-elephant shell

yes, they were on mtv discover and download but it was for good reason. mix between the strokes and the decemberists. listen to this 3 times straight all the way through.
5.I Killed the Prom Queen-when goodbye means forever

hhheeavyy, from down under. its old but so good. they're probably the only thing keeping australia cool. that and those parks where you can hold koalas.
